Agriculture

Toyohashi is blessed with a flat landscape, a mild climate, and a plentiful
water supply from the Toyogawa Waterway, making it one of the leading agricultural
regions of Japan. In addition to the cultivation of diverse crops, ranging from
vegetables cultivated in open fields, fruits, horticultural crops and rice,
livestock farming is also popular, boasting Japan's highest number of farmed
quails, as well as pig farms, poultry farms etc.
However, problems are arising due to an increase in imported agricultural goods
and the ageing of the farming population, with a lack of farmers to continue
maintaining this industry. Toyohashi is therefore training farmers, supporting
an industrial/logistics base and the rural community, strengthening the economic
base of the industry and promoting environment-friendly agricultural methods.

Toyogawa Waterway

The Toyogawa Waterway covers approximately 20,000 hectares of land, centering
on Toyohashi and its environs. It supplies water for agricultural irrigation,
water for the homes of approximately 760,000 people, and water to the coastal
industrial sites. Thanks to the Toyogawa Waterway, greenhouse horticulture has
shown particularly rapid growth, and this region is Japan's leading agricultural
belt for crops grown under cover.

Banba Regulating Reservoir

The reservoir was built as part of the Toyogawa Comprehensive Water
Utilization Enterprise in order to better utilize water from the Toyogawa
River system. The effective amount of water storage is 5 million tons.
As a water storage facility built on flat land, it is one of the largest
in the world. The surrounding area has been developed into green parks,
pathways and playgrounds in which citizens can relax. |
